  2. and parts of the USA. The term was originally
  3. used by Germanic peoples to denote a group of
  4. 100 warriors, also the area occupied by 100
  5. families or equalling 100 hides (one hide
  6. being the amount of land necessary to support
  7. a peasant family). When the Germanic peoples
  8. settled in England, the hundred remained the
  9. basic military and administrative division of
  10. England until its abolition 1867.
